Have you heard? An exciting event is happening at the Victoria Public Library this Saturday.
What: One-day conference on crime writing, sponsored by the BC Chapter of Crime Writers of Canada and the Greater Victoria Public Library, downtown branch.
When: Saturday, May 15, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Where: Victoria Public Library Boardroom, 735 Broughton
Cost is FREE, but seating is limited.

Amendment...

Why, dear reader, thank you so much for asking. Maynely A Mystery can be found in the brand new bookstore -- Overleaf Cafe and Bookstore.
How can I get there?
Overleaf is located at 170-1105 Pandora Avenue Victoria, BC
Can I have peek inside?
Sure you can but sadly I have to wait. I'm planning to visit in early March (either on or shortly after March 13th). If you can visit sooner. (Say next weekend -- February 27th) Then you are in store for some real fun. Overleaf will be offering book readings. To attend the first Saturday Salon, arrive at Overleaf at noon. By her emails, I know that owner Barbara Julian is helpful and friendly. Please support her. And while you're there look for Maynely a Mystery.

Thank you to the old year -- happy new year

For my writing career, 2009 was a banner year. It was the year that I saw me fulfill many dreams...
-I finished writing a mystery. My largest writing project to date.
-Kind bookstore owners placed Maynely A Mystery on their bookshelves.
-I held a book launch on Mayne Island and people came. : )
-I travelled home to Eriksdale, Manitoba to give a book reading. I was welcomed home. The support I received overwhelmed me.
-One of my stories (Because She Believed In Me) was included in the Island Writer Magazine.
-I gave a spoken word performance on Vancouver Island.
2009 was a delightful year. I am thrilled that I was able to accomplish as much as I did.
I have many dreams for 2010 -- I am working hard to transform them from fantasies into reality.

McNally Robinson files for bankruptcy

I received news last night that McNally Robinson booksellers is filing for bankruptcy. They will be closing their bookstore located in Polo Park. As you may be aware, this is one of the locations where Maynely A Mystery is currently being sold. I have contacted McNally Robinson. I am hopeful that Maynely A Mystery will continue to be sold through McNally Robinson. The best thing that you can do is continue to support McNally Robinson through this troubling time.

This Christmas, for me, wasn't about running to the mall for the millionth time to buy something that no one needed but I just had to buy.
This Christmas, for me, wasn't about trying to out do, out purchase, out busy, or out... (fill in the blank). This island has taught me to be who I am. Take pride in that and others will accept me.
This Christmas, for me, wasn't about unwrapping an enormously expensive gift.
This Christmas taught me that there are more important thing than what is under the tree.
This Christmas I was blessed to be surrounded by friends, chatter, laughter, fun.
This Christmas I am thankful to be well feed, well loved, and well kept on a idyllic island in the Pacific.
I wish for you, my friend, a home, a head, a heart that's full.

Fables is on Salt Spring Island. Salt Spring Island is one of the southern gulf islands. The gulf islands are located between Vancouver Island and the British Columbia mainland.

My pen is being kept very busy these days. I am writing what I think is a novella but which very well might become a novel. You know how these things go. I will keep you posted as I progress.

I was recently featured in Aqua magazine. The magazine reports on the culture of the Southern Gulf Islands. The article skillfully written by Cherie Thiessen starts on page 9. My smiling face beams at you thanks to my friend and talented photographer Toby Snelgrove. I was attempting to post a link to the ezine...but sadly this feat seems to be beyond my abilities. I have been writing all day. Now I'm having trouble focusing and so I think its time for a break. I know I promised to catch you up on my news. I will keep that promise. Hopefully tomorrow.

Brief report: As you know, I read on Vancouver Island. From where I stood, the place looked packed. Everyone was so nice and supportive. Now I'm hooked.
Will I do it again?

While in Eriksdale, Manitoba my interview with reporter Heather Robbins appeared in the Interlake Spectator. (Hubby just said that, "People need to know that the Interlake Spactator is the local paper." It is distributed through out the interlake. Book reading at the Eriksdale Public Library

Last night at 7 pm I read to a crowd of 20 kind, supportive readers at the Eriksdale Public Library during my book reading. The evening ended with buying of books. I didn't bring sufficient books so I now have a waiting list (Hey, hubby please send me 11 books).

Weather or not...

Manitoba is one exciting place.
When I arrived in September it was hot.
How hot was it?
It was so hot that I had to go shopping for shorts.
And now...and now...hold on to your hats. Now it is snowing.
Yes, it is true boys and girls. As I write, the white stuff is streaming down from the sky. It isn't staying yet.
Now if it was snowing on Mayne Island my heart would not be filled with glee. But I'm not on Mayne Island. I'm in Manitoba. I'm in Eriksdale. And I'm witnessing the first snow. And my heart is filled with the glee of a kindergartner.

PS I found a recipe that I've been playing with. The following is a extreme alteration of the recipe. I have yet to go this far. But maybe (hopefully) you're braver.

2/3 cup maple syrup
1/2 cup smooth peanut butter (why not add strawberry jam)
4 C rice cereal (why not use garnola)
raisins (why not use chocolate chips)

In large saucepan over medium heat, toss in the syrup and the peanut butter. Stir in cereal. Remove from heat and stir in raisins.
Spread mixture in non-stick 8-inch square baking dish. Place in fridge for an hour or more. When firm cut into squares.

Alone in the universe

The house were I'm staying is a lone beacon on a deserted back road. Yesterday I went for a walk. I walked north.
How far?
Until the road ended.
How far was that?
I didn't know. Today I asked and was told, "In total you walked six miles. I use to dream of doing something that stupid."
Today I went for another walk. This time I walked south.
How far?
Until I came to a stand of trees.
I counted my distance in time not miles. I walked for half a hour.
During my walk I saw no houses and no vehicles. I did see a herd of cattle grazing in the distance -- putting on winter fat.
Fifteen minutes into my walk I stood in the middle of that road. I was overcome by the beauty of the place.
Did I see a mountain?
No.
Did I see the ocean?
No.
Did I see a garden?
No.
Did I see architecture?
No.
I saw bald prairie and wondered how I could of possibly stayed away for an entire decade.

Well I made it to Eriksdale and yes I do have Internet access. This weekend was full of family and fun. However, today I have rolled up my sleeves and am working: knitting and writing. So no more delay back at it.

I went for a walk a little while ago. I walked all the way to the end of number 417 road. And actually I found the more I moved the warmer it got. I had to replace my wool toque with earmuffs. The weather has risen five degrees and I did see the sun today.

The game plan: I will leave Winnipeg at 5 pm today. I will be headed north -- 92 k -- to my old hometown. Last time I visited I discovered -- to my dismay -- that they had named the streets. Who needs street names? What's wrong with directions like: you know the house beside the one where old man Brown lived.
There's nothing wrong with them.
I really hope I don't find numbers on the houses.
Anyway...
It was nice visiting the golden boy.
I would like to thank all those people who gave directions to this lost island gal. Thank you to the mail carrier. Thank you to the lady walking the dog. Thank you to the clerks behind the counter.
A special thanks to the lady who gave me bus tickets. I just may use them someday.
Yesterday it rained. Today the city is bathed in golden light. Who knows what tomorrow will bring.
Focusing on this second...I'm listening to the Weakerthans song "I hate Winnipeg". Why aren't you?

Manitoba

Well, I made it to sunny Manitoba. I packed for fall and I arrived in the dog days of summer.

Was it hot? You ask.

Oh, yeah, I answer.

Nothing to do but buy more clothes. I lucked into a great sale. Two pair of shorts, a shirt, a belt for under $40

Manitoba had even more fun in store. I caught the tail end of the Thin Air writers' festival. On Saturday a children's author - Tim Wynne-Jones - spoken in the morning and a mystery writer - Terry Griggs - read in the afternoon. After her reading Ms. Griggs answered questions. Both authors shared so much and I learnt so much. I am very glad I went.

I've connected with friends and family here in Winnipeg. It has been so nice to see everyone. However, city life is not for me. I planned to stay two weeks but I have decided to cut my visit short and flee to rural Manitoba early than expected.

Am I bushed?

Some have speculated so.

If so it is a happy state.

I will try to write as often as I can but I'm not sure about Internet access. Know I'm thinking of you and having a wonderful time.

Magic is alive on Salt Spring Island

I'm back on Mayne Island after a two day stay with my aunt on Salt Spring Island. It was a fun stay full of surprises.
Monday I help tidy up Mahon Hall. ArtCraft is over for another year. I collected my unsold inventory. Not much left. Although there were seven books. I wondered what I would do with those seven books.
I needn't have worried long.
Next day I went to the bookstores that are currently carrying my books. I only found one book left. It was on display at Sabine's. Volume II Bookstore and Salt Spring Books had run out of books. All had found homes with readers. Well, out came those seven books. Now if you want a copy of Maynely a Mystery and you live on Salt Spring Island all you need do is walk on down to Volumne II Bookstore or over to Salt Spring Books, lay down your cash and walk home with your new book.
That same day -- Tuesday -- at 2 pm, I tried something new and fun. I visited CFSI (the new Salt Spring Island radio station). I had a nice tour and then began work. That's right I read a piece of my work for the radio station. I will let you know when it will be aired as soon as I know.
I had a wonderful time on Salt Spring but it is good to be home.

Yesterday I phoned some of the people I plan to visit while in Manitoba. Usually when I hang up I am caught with the overwhelming feeling that there are too many miles separating us. However, this time when I hung up I realized that in sixteen days I will conquer those miles. That soon I will sit across the table with a teacup full of herb tea and chat with them face to face. How soon can I start packing? : )

Last night I watched the entire video - two hours - of my book launch. And I realized that , although I exposed a roomful of people to it, I really can't sing or dance. Oh, well, no one ran for the door so I guess they forgave me.

Book Launch: how it began

With help from a friend, I did take a video of the evening. My plan is to post a little slice of the video on YouTube. However, unfortunately, we will all have to wait patiently for that addition. So I thought while you were waiting you may be interested in reading my opening dialogue. I began the evening by saying...

In many respects Maynely a Mystery was and is an enjoyable adventure. It virtually wrote itself. I sat down at my writing desk and the words flowed.
However, sitting down to write, learning to trust the process took a leap of faith.
Maynely a Mystery is my first novel -- my largest writing project. As a teen I wrote rims and rims, unending stories that never found a last chapter. When I grew older, fearful of unfinished stories, I sought to contain my writing in brief articles, poems and short stories.
Here's an example...
One sunny day a worm went for a wiggle. He met a robin.
I even wrote a short joke. Would you like to hear it?
Great!
What did the military drummer say to the tone deaf bulgier?
Sound off.
Anyway, the point is everything I wrote was short. The thought of writing something larger overwhelmed me.
Still the need to write a tribute to Mayne Island in novel form bubbled up inside me. I had to tell the world about the special place I'd found.
So I sat down at my writing desk with a head full of doubt and questions. Oh, so many questions...
Will I ever finish writing it? Will anyone care if I do?
I promised myself if this day did come. If I did finish it. I would throw a big party and invite all of you. Well, I did and here we are -- celebrating...
Tonight will be a gentle blend of music and spoken word.
I will treat you to some excerpts from Maynely a Mystery. These will be sandwiched between music: live music from lively Mayne Island musicians -- my family and friends.

Book launch/by-donation concert/party

Oh, my heavens, this week the event I have been planning for/dreaming about/worrying over for, what seems like, a very long time, will finally be a reality. A party...I'm throwing a party at the Ag Hall. The Ag Hall was built in the 1900s. It features wooden floors, a kitchen and a stage. It is simple in structure but in my mind it holds the memories of Mayne Island's past. The hall echoes with the applause of audiences...neighbours... who attended events: ten days ago, ten months ago, a decade ago, a century ago. Applause will fill the hall once again, the night of September 4th, as I cheer for my family and friends who have come to help me celebrate Maynely a Mystery.
As a friend recently said, in response to my invitation, "Be there or be square."
If you are unable to attend, I will report back...in words, pictures, possibly even a new YouTube video.

Summer friends

As vivid coloured leaves begin to decorate the ground and the there is a crispness to the breeze, I bid my friend Phil a fond farewell until next summer. However, I am thankful that I can visit him at his blog. Please down to the previous posting for the address.

There are some real special people on Mayne Island. I know because I am lucky enough to be related to and friends with some of them. They are helping with (and will appear during) my big night. I'm getting so excited...like a child looking forward to Christmas. September 4th is the big day...only 16 days away. I'm hoping that I won't forget to do anything. The big thing right now is to get the word out. If you can help with that I would be so grateful. My reoccurring nightmare is that no one will come. I know even if this happens I will still have a great time because of the a fore mentioned people. That said, it would be so nice if the Ag Hall was full. I'm going to be mailing out invites tomorrow and hanging posters. I plan to hang a large 'CONCERT' sign on the Ag Hall at lunchtime on the 4th. Your positive thoughts are most appreciated.

Congratulations to Mayne Island's Leanne Dyck on the self-publication of her first work Maynely a Mystery.
The small novella is a fun summer read with an interesting depiction of Gulf Island life and characters juxtaposed with those from a more urban setting. Dyck does a nice job of interweaving humour into her mystery as she takes the reader back to Mayne on her lead character's journey to deliver her grandmother's ashes and discover her own truth while her stereotype cousin tags along.

This year, on Mayne Island, Mother will be honoured with an art show. Our local art council is planning, organizing and presenting this multi-discipline show. Visual art will be on display in the Mayne Island reading centre (library) during the entire month of August. Opening night will be celebrated in Miners Bay Park. The park will be alive with music and spoken word. I will be presenting my poem -- Mother, May I. Please join me in the park on Friday, August 7th from 7 to 10 pm. The live performance will be from 8 to 9 pm.

My hubby introduced me to YouTube. I have enjoyed frequenting it. However, I never dreamed of appearing on it. Then I published a book -- then I bought a video camera and one thing led to another.

Being a new YouTube member, there was a learning curve. On the whole, I did enjoy the experience. I'm sure it will greatly help improve my presentation technique. I plan to add more videos. I hope it won't be too hard to find a camera person. Please stay tuned.

Meet a "Mayner"

From the preface...
'My characters may bear a resemblance to people you know. You may even see yourself in someone. I was influenced by the people who surround and inspire me. However, all characters are fictional. They only speak, move and breathe within the pages of this book.'

One of the Mayne Island residents who has inspired me is Terrill Welch.

I met Terrill Welch at an event she organized to celebrate International Women’s Day. After our short chat, I had a feeling that I had met a dynamic woman, who is engaged in a mission of empowerment.

I am pleased to introduce Terrill

Me: Where did you live before coming to Mayne Island?

Terrill: Naming the string of places I have called home would make a fairy ring around Mayne Island. We most recently lived in Pedder Bay on the far side of the district of Metchosin outside of Victoria. I was born in the farming community of Vanderhoof, British Columbia in the year 1958.

Me: Why did you come to Mayne Island?

Terrill: My partner and I could live anywhere in the world. David is retired and my business is flexible and international in scope. We quickly decided that we wanted to stay in Canada. Prince Edward Island was a strong contender on our list of choices. Fortunately, we found our home first before deciding on any particular geographic location and it just happened to be on Mayne Island. We moved to Mayne Island in May 2007. We now live in a beautiful eco-friendly strawbale timberframe home that was built by Tracy Calvert. To the relief of our collection of eight grown children, we have settled on the south west coast instead of across the country!

Me: Why do you stay?

Terrill: We are comfortable with the semi-rural life-style and feel like a valued part of the small community here on the island.

Me: What do you like best about living and working here?

Terrill: …that I can!

Me: What do you do for fun on the island?

Terrill: My most favourite island activity is to hike around exploring cliffs and seashores with a heavy digital cannon camera slung over my shoulder. My second most favourite thing is to have friends and family over to visit.

Me: What do you like the least?

Terrill: Long-term what is least controllable about living on an island is reliable and affordable ferry service.

Me: Why would you leave?

Terrill: We are staying.

Me: Please tell us about your business.

Terrill: I am a woman living a life of simple abundance. My vision for the world is that we are walking in the sunshine of our soul; embracing difference, joy, colour and transformation as opportunities present themselves. I can be counted on to hold space for actualizing diversity, harmony and greatness in our being.
My life's work is focused on changing the social fabric of society through action which enhances the quality of life for women and children. I trust that if this work is successful, the world will be a better place for everyone. Do your part to maintain and sustain it.

-Recycle, reduce and reuse...
Before you leave please take your recycling to our recycling depot. Please take your garbage with you. There is no landfill site on our island. We must pay to have garbage hauled off the island. And, please don't litter.

-Keep your dog on a leash...
Dogs that run loose have and will attack and kill.

-Conserve water

-Beware of the fire hazards...
Signs are posted for your edification. When the fire hazard is extreme please don't light fires (outside or in).

-Support our island economy by purchasing island grown and manufactured items.

-Obey traffic safety rules.... Drive cautiously. Bikers please ride single file down the side of the road.

-Enjoy your stay and come back often.

Write! the Mayne Island writing retreat

On Saturday, June 27th I spent an enjoyable day at the writers' retreat.

I am currently working on my next novel. I write that with the full knowledge that I am stretching the truth. More to the point I should write, I have been attempting to work on my next novel. In reality I have been actively pursuing excuses to prevent me from returning to the writing desk. I have been writing. Sure I have. I have been writing ads, presentations, and other marketing material for Maynely a Mystery. I have been jotting notes for my next novel. ...but writing in earnest ...no, I must confess I have avoided.

I know I needed a wake up call.

And this weekend I did receive one.

What did I learn? What would I like to share with you...

Book Tour in October

In October, I am planning a book tour. I will be traveling to Manitoba. While there I hope to network with some Winnipeg bookstores.

Eriksdale is a rural community with a population of about 991 . The community offers a school, a credit union and senior residences.

Although, the soil is rocky beef and dairy farms abound.

Why am I traveling there?

Eriksdale is a special place to me. I was born and raised there. As well, seventeen years ago in August, I was married there.

It has been ten years since I have been back. It is time to return. I hope to take you with me. Pack your sweaters -- we may get snow.

Where did all the books go?

Scroll back to June 15th (What I did last weekend). You will find an account of the arrival of these. I picked them up from Island Blue Print on Saturday, June 13th.

A box full of 50 copies of my mystery novel - Maynely a Mystery. Humble beginnings. I picked up the box as I would a box full of puppies. I knew my mission was to find a good home for each and every one of them.

Well, I'm pleased to write that this is what is left.

Of these nine copies three are sold. I'm simply holding them for their off-island readers. It took me ten days to find good homes for my little puppies. I am thrilled by this success. And, yes, most importantly, I have placed another order with Island Blue Print.

the mystery on the front cover

April 4th dawned sunny and warm. I packed my camera thinking that inspiration might strike. As it was Monday, I went to Tia Chi class. After class, inspiration did strike and I toured the island on my bright yellow electric bike taking photos.

Surely one of this pictures will be perfect for the front cover of my novel, I thought.

I clicked happily photos of views of the ocean from Felix Jack road, from Village Bay road and finally I decided to try taking some pictures at Miners Bay Park. You know the park by the reading centre.

After my adventure in photography, I was eager to get home and view my yield.

Well, the picture that I took at Miners Bay Park immediately stood out for me. I smiled contentedly. I had the picture for the front cover.

Now three months later I am still very pleased.

Recently, I was looking at my book with my hubby.

He casually said, "Oh, yes, I was meaning to ask you. Whose boat is that?"

"I don't know," I said.

He looked puzzled, "What do you mean, you don't know? Didn't you ask permission before you took the photo?"

"No," I confessed. "Do you think that will be a problem?"

"I don't know it could be," he said.

Well, that was enough to make me worry. ...but what could I do the book had been published.

On Monday, I made a Post Office run. While mailing my book to bookstores and libraries I explained to the Meredith (Mayne Island's Post Mistress) that I had my new book.

"Do you want to see it I asked?"

She did. I showed it to her. She was intrigued. She asked, "Who's boat is that?"

I paused. I didn't know how to answer that question.

"You know that might be our boat," she said.

"Really," I said hopeful. "If it was your boat would it be okay if it was on the front cover?"

"Of course," she said.

Oh, please be Meredith's boat, I thought.

"When did you take the picture?" She asked.

"In April," I said.

"Where was the picture taken?" She asked.

I told her the location.

"No, it isn't our boat," she said. "I think its Mark's boat."

How would Mark feel about his boat being on the front cover, I worried.

This morning I went to the Mayne Island reading centre. It was my volunteer day. Outside the library three dead trees were being removed. Mark is a tree trimmer. He is well skilled at his job. Watching him remove the trees was an event. An audience soon assembled. It was a tricky feat. The trees could have caused a lot of damage. Telephone lines could have been cut. Vehicles damaged. Well, we need not have worried -- Mark safely fell the trees.

My shift at the reading centre ended. As I left the centre I noticed that Mark was packing to leave as well.

Now is the time, I told myself.

What will his reaction be, I worried.

I explained. He smiled.

"A picture of my boat is on your novel," he said.

"Yes," I confessed.

"Well, well," he seemed pleased.

"Is that okay?" I asked.

"Of course," he said. "You know that boat is an antique. It was built at New Westminster in the 1920s."

Another piece of Mayne Island history preserved for all time. Preserved on the cover of Maynely a Mystery. Another Mayne Island mystery solved. Thank you so much Mark for being so understanding.

There was one woman who was prim and proper: nothing out of place, everything just so. She sat there, arms folded, legs crossed, an oversized patent leather purse balanced on her knee. She looked out the window, then down to her purse, then out the window, then down to her purse again. She uncrossed her knees. She opened her purse and searched all of the compartments. She examined each and every article down to a penny. Then she closed her purse and laid it back down on her lap. She stood up, smoothed her skirt against her firm bum, and sat back down. She crossed her legs. She folded her arms. She looked out the window, then back to her purse, then out the window again. Finally, she got up and walked over to the Chief Steward's office. She engaged the officer in a brief dialogue then returned to her seat.

This performance took about ten minutes and occurred regularly. Olivia was intrigued. Who was she? Where was she heading? What was her story? Why was she so agitated? Olivia gratefully lost herself in these questions.

On and on the inane conservation ran. Olivia considered leaving her cousin to be picked apart by this maggot. She considered it but immediately rejected the idea. Suzie was her responsibility. So instead of removing herself, Olivia looked around for a distraction.

She looked out the window but all she saw was ocean. She scanned her fellow passengers. Among them was an elderly couple that seemed to be still very much in love. They held hands and gazed into each other's eyes. A young child was revealing amazing athleticism by walking unaided on the back of a bench. Other children sat reading books or raced around screaming. There were women in shorts that shouldn't have been wearing shorts. There were men with beer bellies discussing sports.

"Well, on Wednesday I left Mayne Island. I jumped on to a ferry and travelled to Salt Spring Island."

at Mahon Hall. Today, June 12th, the graceful old hall transforms into ArtCraft (a seasonal gallery). ArtCraft showcases gulf island talent. Artists/artisan from Galiano, Pender, Saturna, Mayne and Salt Spring fill the hall with their creations.

So on Wednesday I delivered my inventory: sweaters for babies and children, hats for babies, Maynely True my colleciton of short stories, Novelty Yarn my audio book, and Yarn Therapy my learn to knit pattern book. Maynely a Mystery will arrive later.

ArtCraft's grand opening is June 19th. Doors open at 6pm. The party starts to swing at 7 pm. I will be there and so will Maynely a Mystery. I hope to see you there as well."

Olivia sat on the ferry, her nose buried in a book as a pest incessantly buzzed in her cousin's ear. Suzie was used to this attention and gloried in it. Men always flocked to her like tourists to a hot, sandy beach. Olivia wasn't used to the attention, and the ceaseless chattering annoyed her. She tried to lose herself in her novel but she soon realized that reading was impossible and the book became little more than a screen.

"So where are you headed, beautiful?" the six foot two-inch, mustached bug buzzed. He was attractive enough, Olivia admitted to herself, rugged and outdoorsy, but much too needy.

"Man Island," Suzie smiled.

"She means Mayne Island," Olivia corrected.

Olivia received a look from the man that said her amendment wasn't necessary and wasn't appreciated.

From the time she was born, everyone had fallen immediately under Suzie's spell. They fawned over her wavy platinum blonde hair, her long eyelashes, her turned-up nose and her big blue eyes. Allowances were made, doors opened, simply because of her looks. Nothing was expected from her: she was simply meant to be, not to do, not to think.

"Oh, baby, why not come to Galiano with me? We'll have so much fun," Suzie's latest victim drooled.

"Oh, can I come? Please, please can I come? Please," Suzie pleaded. "I'd like to come too. I may not have been Grammie's favourite but I loved her too, you know. I was her granddaughter too. Please! We'll have so much fun. I never get to go anywhere..."

"I thought you just came back from Paris?" Olivia asked.

"Paris? I went to Paris a month ago. I haven't been anywhere in a whole month," Suzie begged. "Pl-e-e-ze."

"Pack your bags." Olivia's teeth were clenched and her grin pasted on but Suzie didn't notice.

Suzie clapped her hands with glee, "Oh, goody, goody, goody an ocean voyage! What shall I pack? What shall I pack?"

"I'm sure your Auntie Kathie would be happy to help you with that," Olivia said as she left with the urn.

Embarrassed by the spectacle they were creating, Olivia and Katherine both stopped tugging. The urn once again rested comfortably in Olivia's arms.

"Olivia is planning to take Grandma Esther to a far-off island." Katherine said in a bedtime story voice.

Sure, go ahead, tell poor, simple Suzie a bedtime story. I'm the big bad witch of the north, Olivia thought, right, Mother? And you, and you are the good witch? Live in fantasies. Live your whole life in fantasies. What do I care? But I will no longer live in the world that you built for me. I refuse. This is my life and I will live it my way. Grandma asked me to do one last thing for her and I will. You can't bully me any longer.

"You stop it! She's my mother," Katherine said.

"I heard no such thing. The family has decided. She's gone -- we're here. No one will be buried on that godforsaken island. This is the family estate. She will be buried on this land. In this garden." Katherine reached for the urn and began to pull it away from Olivia. "Stay out of this. You have more important things to think about your studies for one. Do you think you can spend the rest of your life taking courses with no direction? No conclusion? No end? After all those years, all that studying, what do you have? You don't even have a BA. Your future -- that's you're concern. This isn't."

"I'm going to Mayne Island! I'm taking Grandma Esther with me!"

"You don't know them. They're small-minded, living on a small island. They won't take kindly to a person like you visiting them. They have no frame of reference to relate to someone like you."

"Planning a holiday?" Katherine asked.

"Eavesdropping?" Olivia shot back, "If you must know. Yes, I am."

"Well, where are you going?" Katherine asked.

"Oh, to one of the Southern Gulf Islands. You probably haven't heard of it," Olivia said, continuing to play along.

"Oh, I may have. Which are you planning to visit?"

"Mayne Island."

"Why would you go there? There's nothing there but trees. It's a waste of land."

"Why would I go there?! You know just as well as I why I'm going there. It was Grandma's last wish to be buried there."

Olivia laid a hand on the urn and stroked it affectionately.

"Well, Grandma, shall we go to your island?"

Olivia flipped open her cellphone and punched in the number for BC ferries. Her fingers played with a set of car keys, as she made a reservation for the following morning's sailing. The keys were to her grandmother's 2008 XJ hybrid Jaguar. The car now belonged to Olivia.

Though the will had yet to probated, her grandmother had arranged that the car would immediately be turned over to Olivia upon Esther's death.

Some family members grumbled and complained but Esther's personal secretary, Nancy Brown, had waved the documentation in their faces. Olivia was the new owner of the Jag.

Olivia flipped her phone closed. Then she carefully picked up the urn and cradled it in her arms.

There were three other group photos. These revealed how the family changed over the years -- in size and in economic status.

Esther had married four times. With each marriage she had acquired more children and accumulated more wealth.

Olivia heard her mother's voice from years ago ringing in her ears.

"This is my stepfather...Peter...John...Thomas. This is my half-brother -- your uncle Andrew, my half-sister -- your aunt Julia," Katherine continued until she had identified each of her seven siblings.

These words half-brother and half-sister made it clear she laid no claim to these interlopers. She was Esther's and Pat's daughter. No one else could claim that lineage. Even though Pat had never read her a bedtime story, paid her an allowance, or taught her how to ride a bike no man could replace him. He, and only he, was her father. Through Peter, John and Thomas had been there for her, had helped raise her, none gained the status of the invincible, invisible Pat.

Olivia turned to the third member of the composition -- the father. Thee he stood straight and tall. He stood guard over his wife, over his child.

Esther had painted vivid images of this man for Olivia. She had told her that the uniform he wore was that of an officer. That his name was Patrick Cronley. Olivia was encouraged to refer to the man as "Grandpa Pat". Olivia had been shown the medals of honour, of courage, Grandpa Pat had been given. She'd held the medals but she had never met the man. He had died in 1943 serving Canada in the Second World War. Mere months after the picture had been taken. Katherine had been barely one year old.

Although the black and white picture couldn't reveal the bonnet's colour, Olivia knew that it was mint-green with matching ribbon ties. She had seen the bonnet, Katherine had unwrapped it from a bed of white tissue paper. Olivia had held the bonnet. Her fingers had glided over the fine stitches and silk ribbon.

Who had crocheted the bonnet? That question had never been addressed. Certainly Esther hadn't made it. Sh had dabbled in drawing. "Amateur pencil sketches" is how she had described her art. She had never crafted. Was it a class distinction? Olivia wondered.

Had the bonnet been crocheted by a proud grandmother?

Possibly, but Olivia doubted it was Esther's mother. Esther's parentage had never been discussed. Indeed, Olivia had never even heard of aunts, uncles, cousins or siblings. And none had attended the funeral.

Had Grandma Esther been an orphan? And if so, had she been an orphan of birth or circumstance? Had her family turned their back on her due to some unforgivable sin?

Questions everywhere Olivia looked.

Will I ever find the answers? she wondered.

The mourners left as they had arrived, in ones, twos, and threes. Olivia lingered, as did her parents and a few of her cousins.

In the garden, an Irish lace tablecloth covered a small antique cast-iron table. On the table rested photos of Grandmother Esther and the urn that contained her ashes. The photos recounted a lifetime: Esther as a young woman barely out of her teens, then with each husband and with her progressively increasing family.

The first of these family photos was a black and white picture in a simple plain wood frame. Olivia knew the picture well. It was one Katherine proudly displayed on her fireplace mantel. Occupying the center of the picture, seated on a chair, was a young woman. Her long fair hair was swept back from her face. It was secured on either side by two ribbon clips. The rest of her hair hung in long curls. Olivia could tell that the woman had applied make-up for the picture. Her lips were unnaturally dark. Resting in the woman's lap was a bundle of blankets. Poking from the folds of the blanket was a baby -- crocheted bonnet on its head.

As Olivia socialized, she overheard other conversations. She heard whispers. Who was Olivia? Why was she here? Who was her father? Their curiosity probed, Olivia felt their icy stares. They viewed her as ignobly born or worse. Love child. Bastard. They thought she couldn't hear them but she did.

Some -- a few -- spoke up in defense of her birthright. But they spoke quietly so as not to be ostracized by the others.

If Grandma Esther had been alive none of this would have been tolerated. She would have stood beside me. Icy stares would have been returned in measure -- wagging tongues silenced.

Grandma Esther would have loudly said, "This is Olivia. She is my granddaughter."

A statement of fact. A challenge.

Grandma Esther was so sure of my place in the world, so sure that I belonged. ...But without her strength and support without her...I am alone.

The stories the mourners shared were prosaic but they were made sacred by shared grief. Together the words formed a quilt that Olivia wrapped around her body. The memories kept her warm -- they protected her. Wrapped in the quilt of memories she was numb to the pain.

They all think they knew her but no one knew her the way I did, Olivia thought. No one shared the things we shared.

Olivia wanted to be left alone with her grief. She needed to fulfill her grandmother's dying wish. To fulfill this wish she needed information.

Maybe someone here knows where Mayne Island is, she thought.

So she mingled. One of the mourners gave her Mayne Island's location -- one of the Southern Gulf Islands that lay between Vancouver Island and the mainland. After that, however, the pool of information dried up. No one knew why Mayne Island had been important to Esther.

Olivia saw the chocolate cake, she saw the jellied salad, she saw the ribbon sandwiches. She felt empty but she didn't feel hungry. It was a deep emptiness that no amount of food could fill.

She existed in a vacuum. Though the sun shone the world was colourless. Though music played all Olivia heard was a dull drone. Though a gentle warming breeze blew -- she felt cold as ice. Though some of the mourners chatted to her all Olivia heard were bits and pieces of conversation.

"She was always so..."
"I will always remember her for her..."

A minister friend of Esther's, having been robbed of an opportunity to expound on Esther's life in great and profound detail, commented, "How like the sun Esther had been." His voice increased in volume as he spoke.

Everyone is entitled to take comfort in my skills as an orator, he told himself.

"She came into our rain-soaked lives, however, briefly. She warmed us and filled our lives with sunshine. Now she has gone but we must search for the rainbow she has left behind."

He was about to quote the Bible when his wife silenced him with a large piece of chocolate cake. It was a tall cake -- strawberry jam oozed from between the layers. The base was shortbread and the entire cake was coated with buttery chocolate icing. A chocolate dipped strawberry rested on the top of each slice. As his wife had recently put him on a strict diet, he greedily consumed her offering. The chocolate left a trail. It dyed his mouth brown and wrapped around each tooth. His lips abandoned words to smack with glee.

Where was Mayne Island? Why did her grandmother want to be buried there? Olivia had so many questions but Esther had run out of time.

Esther Donaldson's memorial service was as simple and tasteful as she had wished. Her family and friends met in the rose garden. Over an afternoon tea of dainties, ribbon sandwiches and jellied salad, they reminisced about her life.

The weather was pleasant. There was a brief sunshower -- that unusual meteorological combination of rain and sun -- but all agreed it was refreshing.

"It's so nice to finally see the sun again," many remarked. The week had been a wet one. The following week promised to be even wetter. The five-day forecast was for showers increasing to rain by mid-week.

Olivia pushed the door open. She was shocked to see the parchment ghost that her grandmother had become. Gone was the fierce, determined woman -- replaced by little more than a lump in the middle of the king-sized four poster bed.

"Olivia," Katherine said coolly.

"Mother," Olivia sneered.

"Olivia, Olivia, my dear," Esther called in a fragile voice.

Olivia moved closer to her grandma and gently held her hand, "I'm here," she said as she fought back tears.

"Don't cry, my beauty. I've lived a good life. I've been very happy. I only have one regret. Love, you must...you must take me back to Mayne Island. Promise me you will take me back to Mayne Island. Promise me. I won't be able to sleep unless I rest in its soil," she gasped for breath. The sound made Olivia wince.

"I promise, Grandma," Olivia said, as her grandmother's nurse raced into the room.

Vineyards, maids collecting eggs, and fishing boats out at sea -- these familiar scenes passed under her eyes step by step. As she climbed, her hands slid over the polished mahogany handrail. Two rails ran like long, brown snakes down either side of the stairs. She didn't need the rail for support but she liked how the polished wood felt sliding through her palm.

Olivia reached the third floor and passed the chairlift that had been installed a few years ago.

Esther had valiantly fought for independence against the disease that threatened to rob her of it. The installation of the chairlift had been but one attempt to assist her mobility. It now rested unused at the head of the stairs.

Olivia reached her grandmother's bedroom and overheard Esther talking with Katherine.

"Your father loved you so very much. He wanted so badly to watch you grow -- to be there for you."

"I know, Mother. It's okay. You kept him alive for me. He was a red-haired, green-eyed war hero. I never met him but through your stories I feel I know him. Through your stories I grew to love him."

"You should love him. He was a fine man. But the things I told you. The stories I told you...they weren't exactly...they weren't..."

"Why aren't you outside playing with your friends?" Katherine would ask.

Olivia could have explained that she had no friends, that she preferred to be alone, but she knew her mother would have been appalled at such a response.

Katherine wanted Olivia to be popular, to have friends, to be normal. Normal like Suzie. Suzie, Olivia's cousin, was only a few months younger. So, for want of a sibling to compare Olivia to, Katherine used Suzie as a yardstick. Even though Suzie was younger she was much more popular -- friends always surrounded her. Olivia was always alone -- alone with her pens and journals.

Katherine's words echoed in Olivia's ears, "You spend too much time in dreamland. It's not real. Your writing is not real. You need to live in reality. You can't dream your life away." Words that once brought Olivia to tears now made her laugh.

You didn't want me to live in reality, Mother. You wanted me to be happy living in the dreamland you created for me, Olivia thought.

As a child, Olivia had delighted in conjuring stories for each stair. She would sit upon each for hours - a journal on her lap and a pen in her hand.

Olivia recalled her mother's reaction each time she found her sitting on the stairs.

"Chairs are for sitting," she would say. Or "Don't be a nuisance." Or "It's not safe for you to sit there. No one can get by you."

Her grandmother was different.

"Leave the poor girl alone," Olivia overheard her say to Katherine. "She's fine there. There's plenty of room."

Only Grandma Esther showed an interest in her writing. Only Grandma Esther listened to the stories.

Olivia's foot rested on the first of the twenty-four steps.

Each detail of the Donaldson's estate had been carefully planned by Esther and a team of architects. She had spent months studying sketches, catalogues, and paint chips. The staircase stood as one glowing example of her fine taste. The base of the staircase flared out like a bridal gown then gracefully swooped and curved up higher and still higher from the first floor to the second and then finally to the third.

Each stair was work of art. The stairs were constructed from hand-painted Italian ceramic tile. The tiles were ivory white - the paintings of rural scenes and seascapes were navy.

Julia began to cry. Olivia held her. Julia had been two years old when her father had married the woman who now lay dying. Esther had been the only mother Julia had known. In Olivia's arms she shook and sobbed trying to come to terms with what, who she was losing. Finally, she regained her composure and dried her eyes. "All she wants is you, all she wants is you with her. You know your grandmother loves you."

"I've never doubted her love," Olivia said.

"Well then climb those stairs and be with her."

Julia heard the frustration, the anger. It wasn't unfounded. The whole family had been surprised when Olivia had been born. Julia would never have said this out loud but Olivia hadn't, didn't, look like any of the family. She didn't even look like she shared the same ethnicity.

Esther had made repeated efforts to reunite mother and daughter but Olivia resisted each attempt.

Now that Olivia was attending UBC Julia seldom saw her. She did, however, receive regular phone calls. Julia wondered if Olivia phoned Katherine. Sadly, she doubted it.

Julia smiled at her niece as she recalled how Olivia had insisted on moving to campus housing.

"I want to devote myself to my studies -- I want to do well," Olivia said. "And I'm worried that if I stay here there will be too many distractions."

Though it wasn't a choice Julia would have made, she admired Olivia's independent nature.

"We're so glad you've come. She's so very, very weak. She fights for every day. She wants nothing more than to see your smile," the older woman paused. "Katherine is in with her now, but hurry. She needs to see you. She thinks of nothing else."

"Katherine is here? Now? Aunt Julia?" Olivia asked.

Silence.

Katherine, Olivia's mother, described her daughter as willful and unmanageable. Olivia had never shown these traits to her aunt. Instead, Julia found her niece to be shy, withdrawn and always respectful.

Between husbands, as she often was, Julia was living in the mansion with Esther when Olivia left her parents. The three woman had lived happily together. Julia and Olivia had developed a lasting friendship. Olivia had confided in Julia and told her of the frustration she felt with her mother. Julia tried to remain neutral.
